What on Earth is Going On
The days in which we live are unprecedented, we are sailing in uncharted waters, every part of our civilisation is being touched – there appears to be an unravelling of all the structures, institutions and foundations on which our modern world has been built. The parable Jesus told about foundations and building more than two thousand years ago appears now to be a modern parable. The sand is beginning to shift and the foundations are beginning to shake and the buildings are beginning to tumble.
Terrorism is rife making people afraid, economic failure is causing distress among the nations of the world, the cost of living is accelerating out of control putting so many families into poverty, wars and rumours of wars are increasing, climate patterns are so dramatically changing and placing so many at risk, violent crime is killing so many of our young folk, and there is a complete breakdown of moral and social behaviour. There is a fear beginning to grip the peoples of the world and the feeling of despair that is both demoralising and crushing. There is a lack of confidence in government and world leaders in there ability to turn this around. We look on at their human frailty and incompetence and decide that the answer must lie elsewhere.
It is interesting that deep down human beings already know this as the most successful movies are all about help coming from outside our planet – i.e. Superman. This supposition is indeed true and we know that Jesus – who came from outside our planet – brought the message two thousand years ago about another Kingdom. He not only came with the message but He also became the entrance into it by His death on the cross at Calvary and His glorious resurrection – putting in place the greatest rescue mission ever mounted in the history of this world. As Christians we need to believe that the ‘Kingdom’ message Jesus brought is still the relevant message for today. ‘For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.’ (Colossians 1v13-14) The Gospel of the ‘Kingdom’ brings men and women back into alignment with God and to turn them around from being under Satan’s authority to being brought back into relationship and fellowship with Him. With this Kingdom there also comes an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Jesus brought the message, became the sacrifice, opened the way, ascended to heaven and now the Holy Spirit has been released again on earth – He enables us as the ‘body of Christ’ to continue the work of Jesus – He is the Communicator from the Risen Head to His body – from the triumphant King to His citizens – He is the one who brings heaven to earth.
The foundations of this Kingdom are different from that of the world – they are in fact completely opposite. There is no shaking of this kingdom’s foundation as it is built on solid Rock which is Christ. No economic crisis in this Kingdom because there are no rich and poor, no buying and selling but sowing and reaping, the King has unlimited resources which He makes available to all His citizens in order to expand His Kingdom. The wealth of this Kingdom is shared – all its citizens have all things in common and meet each others needs. This Kingdom expands by reaching the poor, by healing broken hearts, by setting prisoners free, by opening blind eyes and by showing the favour of the King. (Luke 4 v 18-19)
In this world system the rich get richer and the poor get poorer even the C.E.O.’s of failed institutions walk away from their incompetence with staggering bonuses – but in this Kingdom the hungry are fed, the thirsty are given to drink, the stranger is taken in, the naked are clothed, the sick are looked after and the prisoners are visited. This will be the final assessment of the King when He gathers the nations before Him. (Matthew 25 v 34-46)
We have every confidence in our King and He rules with equity and justice and righteousness and He has given us the mandate to declare and demonstrate this Kingdom. What does this world need now – It needs the answer to the prayer given by the Lord – ‘Your Kingdom come – Your will be done on earth as in Heaven.’ The peoples of this world need to be exposed to the Kingdom of God and have the opportunity of their eyes being opened, turning from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and have a place among those who are sanctified. (Acts 26 v 18)
Let us take courage and confidence at this time and shape our lives to live under Kingdom principles, fulfil the great commission and the two great commandments and see the heart of nations turned back to God.
